Armenia is one of the countries in the world that are rich in water supplies: there are almost 9450 rivers and more than 100 lakes in the country. That is why Armenia has oftentimes been called «country of rivers and lakes». Among the longest rivers there are Araqs, Akhuryan, Debed, Vorotan, Hrazdan, etc. Among the largest lakes there are Sevan, Arpi, Ayghr, Parz, etc.
You have definitely noticed that not a single sea was mentioned above. That’s because Armenians consider Sevan to sea as it’s the biggest lake in the country. The lake is situated in the Gegharkunik Province, at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level.
It is the main source of irrigation water, meanwhile it provides low-cost electricity, fish and recreation. In fact, the lake provides about 90% of the fish and 80% of the crayfish catch of Armenia. Sevan is particularly famous for its trout (schchan) as an endemic species of the lake, whitefish and crayfish.
Sevan is also one of the main attractions and destinations for tourists. It has got a lot of beaches with some hotels near them. And if you ever happen to visit Armenia include Sevan in your vacation schedule.
