Shamlugh is located at the foot of Lavar Mountain, on the left bank of the Debed. The area is surrounded by forests and rocks. It is situated about 1200-1300m above sea level. It borders on the Republic of Georgia.

For many years Shamlugh has had a multi-ethnic population: Armenians, Georgians, Azeris, Greeks, Russians, Ossetians, Italians, Ukrainians, Belarussians. There is a secondary school. The administrative district of Shamlugh is Uchkilisa. Here is the Greek chapel of St. George.
The main area of the economy is industry. There are clay reserves that are of industrial importance and are extracted. It was founded in 1770 by artisanal miners, whom King Heracles II of Georgia invited to Lori.
