Nature is astounding with its vivid sights and astonishing monuments which make an amazing part of world natural heritage. Such kind of marvelous heritage is “Devil’s Bridge” in Armenia. The Bridge is situated in the Canyon of Vorotan River and stretches for nearly 30 meters length. The gorge is so narrow that even the sun rays are not able to penetrate to the bottom of the gorge. One of the picturesque monuments of nature – the Devil’s Bridge is situated here in this deep canyon, surrounded with many mountainous springs the waters of which had painted the rocks of the canyon with pink, yellow and green colors.
The stalactites made by the mineral water springs hang from the edges of this stone arch, and beautiful falls are rushing down from the rock caves under the natural bridge. The mineral springs are situated just under the bridge. They are poured into the Vorotan River to make it more lavish. Vorotan gorge is famous for its mineral waters, which cure different diseases. It’s interesting to know, that people knew about it many centuries ago, and rich Armenians used to spend summers here and get treatment. The temperature of the waters of springs is 25 degrees. In some parts where there are warm mineral water pools, people like to have hot baths, not only for enjoying themselves but also for medical purposes.
At first sight, it seems that the small and thin river flows under the bridge but, in its place, we see a deeper river flowing from the bridge, and this is the reason that people named the natural bridge “Devil’s Bridge”. Nowadays, people are used to looking at the river-bed of Vorotan and to say, “It is the devil’s work…”.
The Devil’s Bridge is known to the locals as Satani Kamurj: in Armenian “Satana” meaning devil and “Kamurj” meaning bridge. It is also known as “Armenia’s magnificent canyon” and the natural pearl of Syunik.
Satani kamurj is quite dangerous and crossing it will be an unforgettable life experience. If you love taking challenges of nature, then go for it!
The stunning beauty of Vorotan “gorge with pools” will always be a nice choice and you’ll never regret seeing it!
