The Armenians are one of the oldest nations in the Middle East and they belong to the Eurasian (Europoid) race of Armenoid (Western Asian) type. This type is characterized by short and round skull, wide and medium-height forehead, medium face size, long and curved nose, thick eyebrows, wide and dark (rarely light blue, scarce blue) eyes, long eyelashes, thick and dark (rarely blond) hair, white (rarely dark) skin. Third pilosity is well developed. The height is above the average.
The height of Armenians, who belong to Armenoid race, depends on the geographical region-the Armenians of Van, Baghesh, Karin, Yerevan are taller than those Armenians who live in West- Kayseri, Marash and Sivas. The Armenians from the territory of Kharberd and Tigranakert had medium height. The tallest are Van Armenians (medium height 169cm), and Armenians from Kayseri and Marash have 164 cm height. For their height Armenians are very heavy(an average of 72.5 kg).
Cephalic index for Armenians is 85.4- 84 from Van and Yerevan, till 86 in Sivas and 87 in Karin. The average length of head is 185 mm. It reaches till 183 mm in the East and 183mm in the West. The length of Armenians nose is 60 mm and rather wide- 38 mm. Width varies from 37.4 mm(in Van) to 38.4 mm(in Kayseri).
The skin color of Armenians is pink-white, dark white and light brown. Dark white is special to 85% of Armenians. Light- pink skin is particular to 8% of Armenians, especially it’s common to immigrants from Van and light brown is common among Kayseri Armenians. Hair are usually dark brown, it is particular to 58% of Armenians, and black and medium brown to 38% of Armenians generally. The rest of the Armenians (6%) has reddish-brown hair. The beard color of men who have brown hair are the same, men with brown hair have red or reddish-brown beard. i.e only 75% of Armenians has black pilosity. Brown and reddish-brown hair are the most typical to the Armenians, who migrate from the lake Van surroundings. Black hair color is typical to Armenians who migrate from Syria, southern and western areas. The 73% of Armenians has brown eyes. Dark brown eyes are most common in the West, where it is 36% and are very rare to those Armenians who lived near the Lake Van, where they were 13% only. Mixed or light colored eyes are common for 34% Van Armenians and only 11% Kayseri Armenians.
Beards and pilosity are quite abundant. The eyebrows are thin and foreheads are rather sloping unlike the representators of Dinaric race, Arabs and Turks. The most thick eyebrows are common for the eastern part of the Armenians. Head brachycephaly structure and furtile pilosity are special only to Armenoid race and only this nation’s representatives. For example, in 1974, anthropologist Alekseyev said that Armenoid race type people don’t stay behind from Ayas and Australian aborigines for their face and body pilosity, and even sometimes they succeed them.
Men average penis length is 13.5 cm, maximum – 21 cm. With its rate, it’s the third in the former Soviet Union and it is considered medium according the world’s average ratings.
Being one of the oldest nations, it’s typical of Armenians to have a periodic disease or Mediterranean familial fever, which is sometimes called “Yerevan Disease”. It is hereditary auto-inflammatory disease, which generally, but not exclusively, is typical of those nations whose ancestors have lived in the basin of the Mediterranean, especially the Armenians, Sephardi Jews (and, to a much lesser extent, Ashkenazi Jews), Cypriots, Turks, and Arabs. Nowadays, most scientists find that periodic disease is caused by a unique mutation of the sixteenth chromosome (the MEFV gene is located on the short arm of chromosome 16).
The types of disease are also chest attack, the symptoms are pleuritis and blood pressure gets higher, also during the most expressed access gasp is noticed. During the joint attacks, there is strong joint pain and during the mixed attacks abdomen is combined with chest, the latter with joint, etc. All kinds of accesses are accompanied by high temperature (40°C and more).
The first accesses of Periodic Disease are revealed mainly among children and teenagers, especially during the period of sexual maturation (85%-90% of them). It happens when the first accesses of diseases are revealed after 40 years old or up to one year. But such cases are very rare.
According to initial data, in the Republic of Armenia there are more than 30.000 people who suffer from “Yerevan Disease”, and during the last few decades, there is a significant increase of disease.
In Armenian Diasphora, mixed marriages with the locals are very spread and anthropological character is changing.
