The Armenian film, having deep roots, has created the pireless pearls of film and has given such an actors, who were supposed to represent the Armenian filmography not only in Armenia and also in foreign environment.
The first steps have been made in the creation of motion pictures, silent films. It lasted more than 10 years, during which were shot nearly 10 documentaries and 31 feature films. The first sound film was Sundukyan’s “Pepo” by Beknazaryan (1935).
Films were shot despite the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The films were generally about war events.
1940-1980 was the great period of the Armenian filmography; the films of this period were special. The real beginning of Armenian film’s current period is the film ‘Barev, yes em” (1965 by Dovlatyan F.). In 1960—70 both contemporary themes and classical national works were equally used. During this period there was a noticeable shift in the comedy genre. Political and ideological inspiration of the epic film genre enriches the wide – scale philosophical mind.
Independence of the film began to introduce a new thematics, contemporary, historical, social, psychological and social changes.
Today, the Armenian filmography still continues its triumphal which adopted decades ago, staying true to its rules.
