There are 49 outstanding cities and towns (“urban communities”) in the Republic of Armenia with 64.3% of the country’s population.
Each city is appealing having its own historical and cultural heritage, each is unique and one of a kind.
The 20 largest cities of the country are the capital city Yerevan, which has status equal to region, communities of Gyumri, Vanadzor, Vagharshapat, Abovyan, Kapan, Hrazdan, Armavir, Dilijan, Artashat, Ijevan, Sevan, Charentsavan, Masis, Ararat, Goris, Gavar, Ashtarak, Artik, Sisian. The population of the mentioned cities exceeds 14 thousand.
Alongside Yerevan, the local self-governed bodies of Vanadzor and Gyumri also have a city council that elects a mayor.
All other towns (urban communities) are governed exclusively by the mayor.
