Tashir (from 1834-1935 – Vorontsovka, until 1991- Kalinino, granted with the status of a town from 1983) is situated on the bank of Tashir river, in the plain of Lori at a height of 1500 meters above sea level.
The town is characterized with a subtropical climate, relief is damp and the annual precipitation level is 800mm.
The city was founded as an exile of Russian sectarians.
There were an Azerbaijani community before 1989, which leaved the town after Armenian- Azerbaijani conflict.
Economy is famous for its refinement of milk and the products, (Lori and Chanakh cheese, butter) which have their high reputation in the Republic of Armenia with their taste and quality.
Nowadays, Tashir is home to a cultural center, 3 public libraries, 3 secondary as well as a music and art schools.
