Have you ever heard about ‘The bambir’? If no, then go and listens to their songs in youtube. Once you get acquainted with this Armenian folk – rock band, you are likely to become one of their numberless fans. The Bambir has recorded many albums. Amongst their most famous songs are “Dghjak”, “Grapes of Sinai”, “Kitour”, “Khio”, etc. The band is well known not only in Armenia, but also abroad due to the concerts in different parts of the world.
The name of the band, bambir, derives from the name of an Armenian national musical instrument. The Bambir has lived through 2 generations. It was formed in 1978 in Gyumri, Armenia by Gagik (Jag) Barseghyan. Initially there were 4 people in the group: Gagik (Jag) Barseghyan, Gourgen Hakobjanyan, Armen Sargsyan, Vladimir Voskanyan and Tatul Yeghiazaryan. They mainly performed traditional Armenians songs (like those of Komitas’) and their modern versions.
In 1992 the second generation was formed: Narek (Bars) Barseghyan, Arik Grigoryan, Arman Kocharyan and Ashot Korganyan. The latter left the band in 2007 and Vardan Paremuzyan joined them. Their songs still maintain the whole entity of the Armenian traditions and culture.
